South Jordan, UT, June 26, 2023: “Marilyn Monroe’s Last Press Conference,” an historical docu-drama exploring Marilyn Monroe’s aspirations as an actor and her entanglements with U.S. President John F. Kennedy as he pursued a sweeping agenda for peace and world disarmament, received the “Best Ensemble Cast” award from Zepstone Media during its Spring 2023 International Film Festival. Also, as part of the festival, the film’s director, Frank H. Cutler, was given an “Honorable Mention” in the First-Time Director category. Additionally, the film was honored this month as an “Official Online Selection” by the Malibu Film Festival and, as a result, is currently streaming on XOLO.TV.
Previously, Amberjo Pratt, who plays Marilyn Monroe, was nominated for “Best Actress” by the Utah Film Awards festival in January.
As an independent Utah film, “Marilyn Monroe’s Last Press Conference,” written and directed by Mr. Cutler, challenges commonly held stereotypes about Ms. Monroe and President Kennedy. The script is built around alleged CIA documents leaked or released. Instead of reinforcing negative and demeaning narratives about Ms. Monroe and Pres. Kennedy, however, the film weaves an alternative storyline, shedding light on their motivations and goals and how they may have intertwined to promote a noble cause. The film also illustrates the potential source of popular conspiracy theories alleging Ms. Monroe’s death was not an accidental suicide, but rather a carefully orchestrated murder.
An important series of scenes in the film features a song from Peter Frampton, “Changing All the Time,” originally released in 1994 on the eponymous album, “Peter Frampton.” It was Mr. Frampton’s only studio release during the 1990s. In the words of Mr. Cutler, “As I worked on the film, I often pondered what songs could be used in the background. I had basically come down to a couple of good choices, not Frampton, when I went back and listened to the Frampton song, "Changing All the Time," and it hit me. That was the song I'd been searching for. It was the perfect sentiment for the complicated finale I was orchestrating and editing for my film. Plus, I’m a big Frampton fan. So, I basically edited the film to match the song, and in my mind, it came out perfectly. It captures the complexity of the situation and the confusion one faces as he or she searches his or her own conscience. Also, I can assure you that Mr. Frampton was pleased we used all the song—yes, all seven minutes—and that we found something from the deep archives that wasn’t ‘Baby, I Love Your Way.’”
